Dr. Richard Allen Williams &
Genita Evangelista Johnson /
Association Black Cardiologists
“Dear Donors of the Dr. Richard Allen Williams and the late Genita Evangelista Johnson / Association of Black Cardiologists Scholarship: Thank you so much for your generous donation. As the first in my family to become a doctor, receiving this scholarship not only alleviates some of the financial burden associated with attending medical school but also further encourages me to continue to pursue my dreams and passions with vigor.
Intrigued by the intricate processes of the human body, I decided to pursue a career in medicine while I was in high school. As a result, I began taking college courses and graduated with an Associate’s Degree at the completion of high school. Subsequently, I went to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where I obtained a double degree in Political Science and Biochemistry. It was during my time here as a student, that my curiosity about the heart began to develop through the mentorship of a Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Jennifer Romano. As a result, I became involved with several research studies focused on improving health outcomes in the Pediatric Cardiology population. My collaboration with experts within this field further fueled my interest in the heart, but it also fostered a love for the investigative process that allows us to make new advances in medicine and improve health outcomes.
As a medical student, I have continued to remain engaged in the field of cardiology as President of the Cardiology Student Interest Group as well as a Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Fellow. I look forward to learning more about the field and working to decrease health inequities for vulnerable populations.
Thank you so much for your generous donation!
With sincerest thanks,
Eméfah C. Loccoh
