The 2020 AMA House of Delegates meeting this November looked a little different this year. Instead of convening in San Diego, delegates gathered virtually across our nation. But that didn’t stop the community from coming together to support physicians, medical students, and community health organizations.
During the Opening Session, a special video presentation from the Foundation was introduced by AMA Vice-Speaker, Dr. Lisa Egbert. The outpouring of generosity that followed was overwhelming! After surpassing the original fundraising goal of $50,000, the AMA Foundation Board of Directors was inspired to do more. They came together and offered to match an additional $25,000 in donations dollar-for-dollar. The delegate community rose to the new challenge and surpassed it in only 24 hours, raising a total of $105,420 in just five days!
In addition to the outpouring of generosity from the delegate community, individuals came together to celebrate. Over 50 people attended the Foundation’s ‘Zoom Room’ to meet medical students who received a Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Medical Scholarships. Physicians shared words of wisdom and advice with medical students, who in turn shared their stories and aspirations. We look forward to hosting many more similar events in the future.
We are incredibly grateful to all of those who helped make the virtual Special Meeting an overwhelming success. Now more than ever, we are resolved to improving the public’s health – especially those among us who are most vulnerable.
