Staff Spotlight: Meet Michael Wren, AMA Foundation’s New Advancement Manager

AMA Foundation staff spotlight

Meet Michael Wren, AMA Foundation’s new Advancement Manager, who has dedicated his career to partnering with passionate donors at prestigious institutions. Michael sat down with Carie Lovstad, AMAF’s Senior Development Officer, to discuss why he’s excited about his new role at the Foundation—and to reveal a few critical mistakes donors and nonprofits often make (and how to avoid them).

As someone who believes philanthropy is more than just giving—it’s about meaningful investment—Michael shares how his unique approach is helping AMAF supporters drive real impact in communities and in the lives of physicians.

Carie: First, let’s jump in with the unexpected—Michael, what’s a surprising talent or hobby you have that not many people know about?

Michael: I have a complete picture framing workshop in my basement. It’s a great hands-on hobby that requires patience, precision… and powertools! It’s also the only place where I’m willing to use the glasses I won’t admit to needing.

Carie: What drew you to join the AMA Foundation team, and how does our mission resonate with your personal values and previous work?

Michael: When I found this position listing, I immediately knew it was going to be the next role in my career. The work itself is varied, cumulative, and rewarding, and it’s deeply fulfilling to be part of an organization that is making a system-wide impact. Additionally, I’ve always found enjoyment as a relationship-builder and in the ‘storyteller’ aspect of fundraising, and there are no shortage of inspiring stories to tell about the AMA Foundation’s work, both in support of individuals and as a community change-maker.

Carie: Over the years, you’ve partnered with some incredibly dedicated donors and organizations. What’s one critical mistake you’ve seen people make when it comes to philanthropy—and how can it be avoided?

Michael: Yes, I have been so fortunate to work at a diverse range of organizations, from a storefront housing services organization to one of Chicago’s most iconic cultural institutions. Across the board, I’ve worked with donors who thought their gift was too small to matter. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Individual gifts of all sizes are crucial to an organization’s ability to withstand contribution variance that can swing when a single large grant doesn’t come through, or another funding stream dries up. Your gift matters. And if you don’t think so, just reach out and ask!

Carie: Let’s talk about impact. What’s one project or initiative that’s stuck with you—and why?

Michael: One of the most personally impactful roles I’ve held was with an organization that provides standards-based art education to children and youth in hospitals. Even though my role didn’t involve actually implementing this programming, raising money to make this work possible has always been a proud achievement in my career.

Carie: The AMA Foundation works to support physicians, promote health equity, and advance medical education. Which of these pillars are you most excited to champion in your role—and how do you see donors making a difference?

Michael: This is a tough one! If you’re making me choose, I feel most inspired by our work advancing medical education. Our Scholarship recipients and Leadership Development Institute participants are such a diverse, motivated, and talented group of young leaders. I truly feel that supporting this group today will affect the landscape of public health tomorrow. And, with the opportunity for donors to support individual scholarship funds, they can truly make a difference in people’s careers and lives.

Carie: Fundraising can often feel transactional, but you’ve said it’s about building real relationships. What’s your approach to connecting with supporters in a meaningful way?

Michael: I truly enjoy my work, and being a part of the AMA Foundation community. I like to think that this shows when I communicate with donors and stakeholders, and I enjoy creating conversation that explores our shared interests – both concerning the AMA Foundation, and beyond. Like Glinda the Good Witch said.. Strangers are just friends I haven’t met yet!

Carie: Lastly, for those who want to get involved or make a difference—what’s one small step they can take today that helps support AMAF’s mission and physicians in our communities?

Michael: Follow us on social media! I know it sounds trivial, but we have fantastic people that make sure our Social Media is full of compelling, insightful content that goes a long way in building a wide network of donors, stakeholders, and AMA Foundation fans. As a national organization, it’s difficult to engage with people face-to-face, but we are eager to chat on social and learn what aspect of the AMA Foundation inspire you.
