The American Medical Association Foundation’s mission of bringing together physicians and communities together to improve our nation’s health is perhaps nowhere more personified than the Excellence in Medicine Awards.

Tina Shah, MD, received the inaugural Dr. Edmond and Rima Cabbabe Dedication to the Profession Award, in 2018 which recognizes a physician who demonstrates active and productive improvement to the profession of medicine through community service, advocacy, leadership, teaching, or philanthropy.

Dr. Shah is a physician and operations scientist focused on helping clinicians work at the top of their game. She is the CEO of TNT Health Enterprises LLC, a company that uses evidence-based strategies in wellbeing to optimize health system operations. In 2016, Dr. Shah was appointed by President Obama to the White House Fellowship. She served as a Special Advisor to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and became the agency’s first Director of Clinician Wellbeing. She has held numerous national leadership roles to advance provider and patient well-being, including as past Chair of the AMA Resident and Fellow Section, and currently at the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Shah received her MD from Sidney Kimmel Medical College and her MPH from Harvard University.

“I am honored to have been nominated and selected by my peers for this award, who I continue to serve and advocate for with my work,” shared Dr. Shah. “My fellow honorees are truly exemplary, having shown a selfless desire to touch the lives of those most in need within their communities and a long-term commitment to increasing access to quality health care for underserved populations.”

As part of the award, the Foundation provides a grant to a health-focused non-profit organization of the awardee’s choice on their behalf.
