The AMA Foundation (AMAF) is pleased to announce the open call for Letters of Intent (LOI) for Cycle 2 of the National LGBTQ+ Fellowship Program.  

This transformative program is designed to address health care inequities experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals by increasing the number of culturally competent LGBTQ+ affirming specialists and further integrating LGBTQ+ health care curriculum in medical education through the development of standards of care. The AMAF’s National LGBTQ+ Fellowship Program encourages information sharing and collaboration in an effort to expand the nation’s ability to develop highly qualified leaders in LGBTQ+ health and to exponentially increase the capacity to care for LGBTQ+ patients.

“The AMA Foundation’s National LGBTQ+ Fellowship Program is our demonstrated commitment to fostering health equity and reducing health care disparities for the LGBTQ+ community,” said AMAF President, Heather A. Smith, MD, MPH. “This transformative program allows us to invest in affirming and inclusive patient care, support institutions on the forefront of embedding equity at all levels of leadership, and collect and analyze data to inform the development of standards of care.”

The call for LOIs is the first step in determining which institution will receive a four-year grant of up to $750,000 to plan and implement three consecutive one-year medical fellowships in LGBTQ+ health. The Fellowship Commission on LGBTQ+ Health will invite select institutions to submit a full proposal for consideration in Spring 2022, and the grant will be announced in June 2022. The deadline to submit an LOI is January 3, 2022, at 11:59PM Central. 

The Cycle 2 grant awardee will join the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine and Public Health in a growing cohort of institutions on the forefront of improving health equity for the LGBTQ+ community.
