The AMA Foundation

Advancing

Medical Education

& Leadership

The AMA Foundation advances medical education and leadership by supporting the development of future physician leaders through targeted, high-impact programs. The Physicians of Tomorrow scholarship program offers crucial financial support to medical students entering their final year, helping to alleviate barriers to completion. The Leadership Development Institute provides intensive training and mentorship to prepare emerging leaders for the complex challenges of modern healthcare. Through the LGBTQ+ Health Fellowship, the Foundation invests in physicians dedicated to improving care for LGBTQ+ communities and advancing health equity.

Leadership

Development

Institute

The Leadership Development Institute (LDI) is an immersive experience designed to equip medical students with the tools, confidence, and community to lead with impact. Rooted in the principles of equity and service, LDI brings together future physician leaders to explore how leadership can drive meaningful change in health care. Through hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world dialogue, students develop their voice, sharpen their vision, and build lasting networks.

Participants are paired with seasoned physician leaders from the AMA House of Delegates and engage in a year-long experience that includes a launch retreat in September, monthly webinars, formal mentorship, and recognition at the AMA Annual Meeting in June.

Physicians

of Tomorrow

Scholarships

The Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship program offers $10,000 in tuition assistance to medical students entering their final year of medical school, at a time when financial support can make all the difference. Since 1950, the AMA Foundation has awarded over $61 million in scholarships to support the development of future physicians.

With 16 scholarship categories, including those focused on students who are underrepresented in medicine, the program celebrates academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to serving the community. All eligible students are encouraged to apply, regardless of AMA membership status.
