CHICAGO — The AMA Foundation has named Andrew “Andy” Bell executive director, effective Feb. 2, 2026. Bell brings more than 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience across philanthropy, public health, and community revitalization, with a focus on strengthening mission-driven organizations.
Bell joins the AMA Foundation after serving in senior leadership roles at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation, and Renew Birmingham. Throughout his career, he has led fundraising initiatives, managed complex operations, and built partnerships that deliver measurable impact. Bell pointed to the AMA Foundation’s mission and its focus on physicians and medical education as central to his interest in the role.
“What excites me most about serving as executive director of the AMA Foundation is the chance to connect physicians, medical education, and better health for all people across the country.”
“What excites me most about serving as executive director of the AMA Foundation is the chance to connect physicians, medical education, and better health for all people across the country,” Bell said. “I am inspired and driven by work that supports those who carry great responsibility for others. The foundation’s role in engaging physicians at critical points in their training and careers feels both timely and essential.”
At the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Bell spent more than a decade in leadership roles, ultimately serving as market president for the Alabama–Louisiana–Mississippi region. He expanded regional fundraising revenue to nearly $3 million annually, launched new signature events, and strengthened support services for people living with multiple sclerosis across the Southeast.
Bell later joined Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation, where he managed a $30 million asset portfolio and grew annual fundraising to nearly $4 million. His work aligned philanthropic strategy with clinical priorities, supported capital investments, and expanded community health initiatives. Most recently at Renew Birmingham, Bell helped lead programs focused on housing, youth employment, food access, and neighborhood revitalization.
“The next phase is about focus and scale. We must invest in programs that work, measure results with discipline, and communicate impact in a way that inspires long-term engagement and partnerships.”
“Looking ahead, I see the AMA Foundation advancing its mission by strengthening and diversifying philanthropic revenue, deepening relationships with physicians and health systems, and more clearly articulating how funding outcomes improve education and leadership development in medicine,” Bell said. “The next phase is about focus and scale. We must invest in programs that work, measure results with discipline, and communicate impact in a way that inspires long-term engagement and partnerships.”
Raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Bell earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in business from Birmingham-Southern College. His commitment to improving health outcomes is informed by personal experience, including long-standing family experiences with chronic illness, which have shaped his perspective on mission-driven work.
