About the Consortium

The AMA Foundation’s LGBTQ+ Health Program engages leading medical schools, healthcare organizations, professional societies, community partners, HIV service organizations, and philanthropic stakeholders to build a national collaborative dedicated to advancing LGBTQ health within academic medicine.

Convening Overview

Our annual convening brings together leading institutions to directly tackle LGBTQ+ health disparities. The two-day event engages hundreds of America’s most influential medical professionals in co-creating vital tools and fostering collaboration among leading health programs to transform health care for LGBTQ+ individuals. The convening represents a unique opportunity to engage in deep discussions, exchange knowledge, and collaborate to shape the future of LGBTQ+ health care.

The 2027 consortium convening will take place in the heart of downtown Chicago. Building on the success of our past events, the 2027 gathering will feature multiple educational tracks, presentations by celebrated advocates and renowned experts in LGBTQ+ health, program directors from grantee award sites, and AMA Foundation leadership.

Registration fees cover breakfast and lunch on March 23 and 24, and the cocktail reception on the 24th. Dates and rates are below:

Excellence in LGBTQ+ Health Award Nominations Open

For the first time, the recipients of the AMA Foundation’s Excellence in LGBTQ+ Health Award will be honored during the AMA Foundation’s annual Consortium Convening on LGBTQ+ Health, March 23–24, 2027, in downtown Chicago. The awards will be presented on March 23, bringing together honorees, academic physicians, health system leaders, advocates, fellows and other professionals committed to improving LGBTQ+ health.

Call for Award Nominations

The Excellence in LGBTQ+ Health Award is part of the AMA Foundation’s Excellence in Medicine Awards, which celebrate physicians and medical advocates who exemplify the profession’s highest values, including leadership, volunteerism, community engagement and service to underserved populations. Each award recipient receives a $2,500 grant honorarium directed to a nonprofit health organization of their choice. Since 2005, the program has recognized more than 100 honorees and awarded over $250,000 to strengthen community health and improve access to high-quality care nationwide.

The Excellence in LGBTQ+ Health Award recognizes physicians, residents / fellows, as well as final-year medical students who have demonstrated exceptional innovation, leadership and impact in LGBTQ+ health. Honorees may be recognized for contributions to policy and advocacy, patient care, teaching and research, workforce diversity, health care administration or other efforts that advance inclusive, affirming care.

2026–2027 Award Nomination Timeline

Submit nominations for physician, resident/fellow, and medical student candidates through our online portal between September 14 and November 23. Visit the Excellence in Medicine Awards web page to learn more and submit a nomination.

Awards presented: March 23, 2027, during the Consortium on LGBTQ+ Health Convening in Chicago (NOTE: AMAF will cover awardees’ convening registration and travel expenses, which include roundtrip airfare and 2 hotel room nights.)

Excellence in LGBTQ+ Health Award Honorees, 2021–2026

The AMA Foundation’s LGBTQ+ Health Program supports advanced physician training, strengthens the pipeline of culturally responsive physician leaders and convenes academic and community partners to advance inclusive, affirming health care. The program continues to build upon the vision and generosity of its founding donors and the leadership of the Commission on LGBTQ+ Health.

Since the award category was established in 2021, the AMA Foundation has recognized the following 17 physician leaders for their leadership, innovation and contributions in medicine to advance LGBTQ+ health. Honorees are listed alphabetically by last name.
