The AMA Foundation
Promoting
Health Equity
The AMA Foundation promotes health equity by supporting physician-led efforts that address systemic barriers to care and improve outcomes in historically underserved communities. Through programs such as the LGBTQ+ Health initiative, targeted chronic disease prevention, and a focused commitment to improving cardiovascular health in high-risk populations, the Foundation empowers physicians to lead change from within. These initiatives not only confront long-standing health disparities but also strengthen community partnerships, elevate underrepresented voices, and advance more inclusive approaches to care.
LGBTQ+
Health Program
The AMA Foundation’s LGBTQ+ Health Program advances health equity by confronting the systemic barriers that LGBTQ+ communities face in accessing affirming, culturally competent care. By strengthening the pipeline of LGBTQ+ physician leaders, the program is helping to transform the future of medicine from within.
This groundbreaking initiative invests in advanced clinical training and inclusive medical education to cultivate physicians who lead with both medical excellence and cultural humility. Fellows are empowered to drive institutional change, challenge outdated norms, and reimagine care models that better serve LGBTQ+ individuals and families.
Through this effort, the Foundation is not only addressing a critical gap in representation and access—it is laying the foundation for a health care system that is more inclusive, affirming, and equitable for all.
Health Equity
Acceleration Fund
The AMA Foundation’s Health Equity Acceleration Fund is responding to the urgent need for a diverse physician workforce following the Supreme Court’s reversal of affirmative action. This two-year initiative is exploring how medical schools and institutions can preserve and advance equity in admissions without race-conscious policies—ensuring that progress toward inclusive care is not rolled back.
Through national convenings, site-based investigative briefs, and collaborative reporting, the project brings together key stakeholders to assess harms, identify innovative strategies, and share restorative approaches that support diversity in medical education. In alignment with the AMA’s firm opposition to the ruling, the initiative reinforces the Foundation’s commitment to protecting representation in medicine and building a future where patients are cared for by physicians who reflect the communities they serve.
