Jeremy A. Lazarus, MD, president of the AMA Foundation Board of Directors

The American Medical Association Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeremy A. Lazarus, MD, as president of its board of directors. A distinguished physician leader and longtime advocate for patients and physicians, Dr. Lazarus brings decades of experience in organized medicine and a deep commitment to advancing the Foundation's work.

Dr. Lazarus, a board-certified psychiatrist, has served on the AMA Foundation board of directors since 2019 and is a former president and speaker of the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates. He has also served as president of the Colorado Medical Society and Colorado Psychiatric Society and as speaker of the Assembly of the American Psychiatric Association. Throughout his career, Dr. Lazarus has championed ethical leadership in medicine, including serving as a member and chair of the AMA's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs.

"I am honored and humbled to assume the position of president of the AMA Foundation," Lazarus said. "Following a long line of dedicated leaders, I look forward to carrying on the foundation's important charitable mission and working with our dedicated volunteers and staff to advance that mission. The year ahead promises many new opportunities, and I am confident that together we will achieve our goals of bringing physicians and communities together to improve the nation's health."

As board president, Dr. Lazarus will help guide efforts to support physicians, promote optimal health outcomes, and advance medical education through scholarships, educational initiatives, and community health programs.

Andy Bell, executive director of the AMA Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for Dr. Lazarus's leadership as board president.

"I'm excited to begin the new fiscal year alongside Dr. Lazarus as president of the AMA Foundation Board of Directors," Bell said. "Dr. Lazarus has been a dedicated foundation leader for the past six years and brings invaluable experience as a former AMA president. His leadership will be instrumental as we launch our strategic planning process, deepen collaboration with the AMA, and continue advancing programs that improve the health of communities across the country."

"Dr. Lazarus' leadership, institutional knowledge, and passion for our mission make him an outstanding partner," Bell added. "I'm looking forward to working together to build a strategic plan that honors our legacy while preparing the foundation for its next chapter of growth and impact."

Dr. Lazarus succeeds Mary Beth Ellison, whose leadership helped strengthen the foundation's philanthropic reach and further its commitment to supporting medical students, physicians, and communities nationwide. As immediate past president, Ellison will continue to serve on the board and support strategic priorities.
