Meet the AMA Foundation's New Board Members

The American Medical Association Foundation is pleased to welcome two new members to its board of directors: Shireen Saxena, MD, and David H. Aizuss, MD. Together, they bring a unique combination of emerging and seasoned physician leadership that will help advance the AMA Foundation's mission of bringing physicians and communities together to improve the nation's health.

Shireen Saxena, MD

Dr. Shireen Saxena is a combined internal medicine and pediatrics resident at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles General Medical Center. Since joining the AMA House of Delegates in 2017, she has served in multiple leadership roles across the Medical Student Section and Resident and Fellow Section, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to physician advocacy and organized medicine.

A passionate advocate for equitable health and philanthropy, Dr. Saxena helps co-manage Los Angeles General Medical Center's resident-run patient care fund, which provides critical support and resources to historically underserved communities. Her clinical and professional interests include allergy and immunology, global public health, climate change, and improving care for underserved populations with complex health needs.

As a member of the AMA Foundation Board of Directors, Dr. Saxena brings an invaluable frontline perspective and a deep commitment to supporting future physicians and advancing healthier communities.

David H. Aizuss, MD

David H. Aizuss, MD, member of the AMA Foundation Board of Directors

Dr. David H. Aizuss is a board-certified ophthalmologist and longtime leader in organized medicine whose service spans more than four decades. He practices in Calabasas, California, and recently concluded his term as chair of the AMA Board of Trustees.

A dedicated advocate throughout his career, Dr. Aizuss has served in numerous leadership roles within the AMA, California Medical Association (CMA), and specialty medical societies. His experience includes service as president of the CMA, California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Los Angeles Society of Ophthalmology, and Los Angeles County Medical Association.

In addition to his leadership in organized medicine, Dr. Aizuss spent nearly 40 years on the faculty of the UCLA Stein Eye Institute and David Geffen School of Medicine. His extensive experience in physician leadership, governance, and health policy will bring valuable insight to the AMA Foundation Board of Directors.

As the AMA Foundation begins its new fiscal year, Drs. Saxena and Aizuss join a dedicated group of leaders committed to supporting future physicians, advancing optimal health outcomes, and strengthening communities nationwide. Their perspectives and expertise will help guide the AMA Foundation's work as it continues to expand opportunities for medical professionals and the patients they serve.
