The AMA Foundation

Cardiovascular

Program

The AMA Foundation is advancing cardiovascular health through its support of the West Side of Chicago Hypertension Control Initiative, a community-based effort targeting one of the leading causes of death in the United States. With nearly half of U.S. adults affected by hypertension—and only one in four managing it effectively—this initiative addresses a critical public health gap. In collaboration with the AMA’s Improving Health Outcomes unit, the Foundation is funding projects focused on reducing hypertension-related complications in historically underserved communities on Chicago’s West Side. By supporting localized, data-driven interventions, this initiative reflects the AMA Foundation’s broader commitment to community health impact and its alignment with national priorities to reduce cardiovascular disease and advance health equity.

“Receiving the Cabbabe award validates the work I have always done in taking care of patients, families and communities—something I am so passionate about. The health of the community, our country and the people we serve is the number one priority. Recognizing that through the award is hugely important.”

2022-2023 Dr. Edmond Cabbabe and Rima Cabbabe Dedication to the Profession Award

More about

The cardiovascular program

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, with hypertension contributing to over 670,000 deaths annually. Despite its prevalence, only 25% of adults with hypertension have their condition under control. In partnership with the AMA’s Improving Health Outcomes business unit, the Foundation is investing in local solutions that aim to increase awareness, expand access to care, and improve blood pressure control.
